Changes for Google Chrome Users

In versions 42 and higher of the Chrome web browser (in beta now, but scheduled for rollout starting 4-14), Google has disabled automatic support for plugins like the one used for live Blue Jeans meetings. When a Chrome user clicks the Join Meeting connection option, the meeting will launch in the operating system's preinstalled browser:

First Time Experience: Once the new version is installed, Chrome users may be prompted to install an updated version of the Blue Jeans plugin and give permission to launch meetings in an alternate browser. Once you have completed this one-time process (which can take a minute or two), the alternate browser window will automatically launch for subsequent meetings joined from Google Chrome.

We are maintaining a Blue Jeans and Chrome FAQ in our Knowledgebase to share the latest information and link to additional options available to Chrome users. If you have additional questions, please ask here! We'll post answers and update the FAQ as required.

Sincerely,

Hello thanks Eric, yes I was in the middle of a Blue Jeans call today and got shut off from this.   Very quickly made the fix thanks to proactive work by Blue Jeans.   However, I do have an idea perhaps:

An error screen pops up telling you to switch to Safari.    Believe the message I was seeing was coming from Blue Jeans.

The issue is for example in my case I pretty much am often talking to people and it is their first exposure to Blue Jeans.   Perhaps on the error message that pops up the solutions for enabling  NPAPI can be put there?  So that way when someone is trying to connect they can quickly make the changes.

Below is the effective instructions that were sent in advance.   As I said I have already fixed my access to version 42 on chrome.  The fix took less than one minute.   Thanks,

**********************************  Instructions to fix below *********************************************

Do not try fixing this until you get a message from Blue Jeans that you need to use another browser or you see that you have been automatically updated to version 42 of chrome.

After Google makes this change PC and Mac users will need to Re-Enable NPAPI Support via
Chrome Flag.
  • This will effect PC users of Chrome for Blue Jeans.
  • If you are on Linux and using Firefox you are all set.
  • If you are on Mac and use Safari you are all set.
  • If you are on a Mac or PC and want to continue using Chrome you need to follow the instructions on Re-Enabling NPAPI Support via Chrome Flag.
  • Google has decided to no longer support NPAPI plugins in version 42 of the Chrome web browser.
  • Blue Jeans has made several options available to you immediately in order to support all your fans of Google Chrome.

Thanks for digging into the FAQ, Mike! As you've seen, Chrome 42+ users have several options, including one to temporarily re-enable NPAPI plugins. Bear in mind, however, that Google plans to permanently disable NPAPI by September of this year. At that time, you will need to transition to an alternate browser for live meetings, the Blue Jeans desktop app, or the upcoming WebRTC-based experience. My expectation is that most occasional participants (plus anyone who can't or won't install an app) will use WebRTC, while regular hosts will prefer the capabilities of the desktop app. In each case, our objective is to make the user experience as simple and consistent as possible.

Yes thanks Eric getting the Blue Jeans desktop app is the perfect solution.  Ideally for my company the majority or our Engineers are on Linux so getting the desktop app working for Linux as well will be the ultimate to cement Blue Jeans into Linaro.   Getting WebRTC working will let  our people use Chrome books and other netbooks for Blue Jeans.

Know Blue Jeans is working hard on solutions and I am working hard on using and promoting  Blue Jeans anywhere I can.

Thanks,  Mike

Hi Sandeep,

Yes, Google disabled NPAPI-based plug-ins in Chrome 42. Fortunately, you can re-enable them in Chrome 42. For instructions, please see http://bluejeans.com/support/knowledgebase?article=Re-Enabling-NPAPI-Support-via-Chrome-Flag.

That is a bummer about Chrome. Currently, I have re-enabled NPAPI. However, I have also tried Firefox. I cannot join meetings as a guest with Firefox because the "Access Meeting" button does not respond to a click. It just does nothing. I have updated Flash, Java, and the BJN plug-in, but it does the same thing. Any ideas on that? Without Firefox and Chrome, I would be left with Internet Explorer... *shudder*.

Yeah, this doesn't sound right. I recommend opening a support case.

Hi guys,

I'm having issues with the automatic Bluejeans launch in Safari. I first access it from Chrome, then once it gets to the part where it says, "Don't worry, we're going to take you to your meeting in Safari", it goes to my Safari browser but the page just doesn't load.

Please help.

Hi Sasha.

You can try opening the bluejeans meeting link directly in Safari. Make sure you "allow all" if prompted. Kindly reach out to support@bluejeans.com if issue continues, we will be more than happy to further assist you.

Thanks for your response Romain.

Since then, I've been able to troubleshoot the issue - turns out I had to choose 'Web App' instead of 'Browser' before I could get the correct download link for the launcher.

Thanks anyway for your help!

Hi Folks! Well, today was the day: Google released Chrome 45, which means that plugin support is gone for good. For the past few months, you could re-enable NPAPI support at chrome://flags/, but not any longer. At least the Blue Jeans plugin continues to work with Firefox, IE, and Safari.

Fortunately for people like me who prefer Chrome, Blue Jeans no needs a plugin: when you choose the "Browser" connection option, the meeting quickly opens in a new Chrome tab (screenshot and more info).

Those of us on Mac and Windows can also install the Blue Jeans app. I usually choose the app because I sometimes lose track of Chrome tabs, especially if I have a couple of Chrome windows open at the same time. The big "B" in my tool tray is just easier for me to manage.

For occasional users and guests, however, meeting in Chrome is a great option: nothing to download, nothing to install, no admin rights required. While we have more freedom to optimize the user experience and features in the Blue Jeans app, the Chrome option is ideal when you're running late and don't have time to install anything new.

Hello Marjor,

From your comment, it sounds like you are trying to connect to the Chrome mobile browser?

The mobile browsers do not support connecting to BlueJeans meetings, but we do offer a mobile application that you can download for free from the App Store.

I hope you find this useful!
